Rules for Build Up

Object of Build Up
Have the highest score after all dominoes are placed.
Equipment
2 sets of double six dominoes in different colors. Use sets without spinners (center posts) on the dominoes.

How to Play
1. Each player turns his dominoes upside down on the table, mixes them, and draws 6 dominoes.
These 12 dominoes are laid out in 2 lines of 6 dominoes each. (How these are placed is not important, although it’s easiest if the dominoes
are not touching each other and are oriented so the long axis of the dominoes are on the line between the two players).
The remaining dominoes form the boneyards, and should be kept separate by color.

2. Each player then draws 1 domino from his boneyard. The player who draws the domino with the most total dots will play first.
Players then draw 5 more dominoes so each has a total of 6 dominoes in his hand.

3. In turn, players place 1 domino from their hand on top of any domino already in line on the table, following these rules for building
. A non-double domino may be placed on any domino as long as the number of total dots is equal to or greater than the domino being covered.
A double domino may cover ANY non-double domino, even if the covered domino has more dots.
A double domino may cover another double domino ONLY if the covered domino has less dots.
Any domino may cover a double domino if it has more total dots. Stacks of dominoes can be any height as
long as each domino added to a stack is played according to the rules for building.
Building Examples:
4-5 may cover 1-2, 2-5, 3-6, etc., but NOT 4-6.
2-2 may cover 0-6, 5-6, 3-4, etc., but NOT 3-3

4. When each players’ initial hand of 6 dominoes has been played, the total number of dots on the dominoes
played is counted for each player. This is the score for the first hand. Players then draw a new hand of 6 dominoes from their bonyards,
play these dominoes, and score for the second hand, adding the current total to the score for the first hand.
Play continues until all dominoes have been taken from the boneyards. Each player has only 4 dominoes in their hand for the final round.

Sequence of Play
Form Boneyards
Draw 6 dominoes and form lines
Draw 1 domino to decide who plays first
Draw 5 dominoes for first hand
Score total dots on table
Draw 6 dominoes for second hand
Score total dots on table and add to previous score
Draw 6 dominoes for third hand
Score total dots on table and add to previous score
Draw 4 dominoes for fourth hand
Score total dots on table and add to previous score, high score wins the game

5. Occasionally a player may have a domino left at the end of a hand that he is unable to play.
This domino is set aside and not returned to the boneyard.

6. The score at the end of each hand is added to the score from the previous hand(s).
The player with the highest score at the end of the game is the winner.

Hints
1. Players should try to cover their opponent’s dominoes rather than their own, but a player may
choose to cover his own domino in order to play a domino he would otherwise have to discard.
2. Covering a high scoring domino with a low double may allow a player to later rid himself of dominoes he would otherwise have to discard.
Of course, this also allows his opponent to do the same!
